General Contractor (GC)
A licensed and insured company/person/group that is responsible for supplying all the materials, labor, equipment or other necessary services for completing the construction or repair of a project. The GC typically has extensive construction knowledge of all trades so they hire, schedule, supervise and/or pay the subcontractors who work on your project so you don't have to. Another benefit or working with a GC is that you can deal with one entity instead of several.
Framing Contractor
A licensed and insured company/person/group that has expertise in constructing or repairing the "skeleton" of a structure including the roofs, walls and floors. Typically the framing contractor deals with the wood and steel construction in a residential or light commercial building project.
Roofing Contractor
A licensed and insured company/person/group that has expertise in constructing or repairing the roofing elements of a structure including the roof membrane, flashing, venting, insulation, etc. Typically a roofing contractor knows the best methods to protect your roof from the elements.
Foundation Contractor
A licensed and insured company/person/group that has expertise in constructing the foundation of a structure including the construction of the forms, placement of the reinforcing steel, mixing, pouring and curing of concrete, grout or mortar and placement of embedded fixtures. Typically the foundation contractor deals with concrete construction and the associated excavation in a residential or light commercial building project.
Repair Contractor
A licensed and insured company/person/group that has expertise in the repair of structural or non-structural building elements. Typically, the repair contractor has experience applying different repair techniques and may enlist the services of other subcontractors who have expertise with or access to particular building materials, i.e. wood, steel, concrete, asbestos, asphalt, fiberglass, etc.
Finish Contractor
A licensed and insured company/person/group that has expertise in the installation, finish and maintenance of various building finish materials including doors, windows, drywall, flooring, siding, cabinets, mouldings, fixtures, etc. Typically, the finish contractor has experience with a variety of different building finishes but may specialize in only one or two related trades.
